His next work, the anti-war film Paths of Glory (1957), was a critically acclaimed indictment of military practice. His later proved that his independent style of filmaking could be applied to Hollywood mainstream films, when he was hired on for his first (and only) work-for-hire directing job on the epic Spartacus (1960). Having showed that he could succeed as a Hollywood director, he moved in 1961 to England, which has been his work residence ever since. The films he produced in the next 25 years were skillfully crafted and each alternatively different from the last film. Included on Kubrick's film resume are an adaptation of Vladimer Nabokov's classic novel Lolita (1962), the hilarious black comedy Dr. Stranglove (1964), the sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), the controversial adaptation of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange (1971) a nd the costume period piece, Barry Lyndon (1975).
Kubrick's last two works, The Shining (1980), an adaptation of the Stephen King horror novel and the Vietnam war tale, Full Metal Jacket, gained mixed reviews as well as mixed public reaction. However, all of these films show Kubrick's skillful use of camera movement, art direction, sound use and touches of black humor. As far as anyone knows, Kubrick has given up directing all together. But, perhaps he will some day return to the peak he reached with Clockwork Orange and Dr. Stranglove. My rating on a scale of 1 to 10: 10
